Okay, so I have a Gateway LX6810-01 desktop pc that has this really nasty habit of shutting down at the most random times. I've narrowed it down to the fact that (thank you, Gateway) the manufacturer failed to install ANY case fans WHATSOEVER. Anyway, assuming that I get that squared away, should I also go and replace the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU? Because apparently my sister has been using the computer while it was in this condition without telling me that it would constantly shut down, so I don't know how long this has been going on, and whether or not the stock paste has disintegrated:-/ So should I replace the thermal paste? or should it not matter?

Hi edchen111,

You seem to be quite familiar with your system, and you are right on track when you say that you should try and replace the thermal paste , because many a times it's the only reason that we find computer freezing up randomly and frustrating us.

Also clean your RAM with an eraser , i mean the connectors of RAM which go in the slot.

Try changing the RAM slot as well and then you won't have such problems of freezing , provided that your hard disk is without viruses and operating system is not corrupted.

Hope this helps ..:)

LOL. Didn't need to replace the paste. Found out the problem, and it wasn't my fault either. Turns out gateway had a lawsuit over this model because they were too cheap to put exhaust and intake fans into it, causing it to randomly shut down. Went to best buy, bought 2 Antec fans, problem solved.

Computer shuts off at random

It sounds like it's overheating, check your fans make sure all are working, if your fans are all working then your power supply is overheating and should be replaced. If your system is a laptop the battery can overheat also and shut the system down. So you can have different issues dependent on laptop to desktop.

My computer screen shuts off at random and will not come back on without shutting it down and restarting what can i do?

If possible, try hooking up another monitor. That way we can figure out if the problem is with the monitor or the PC itself.

If you do this we can narrow the problem down a great deal.

Let us know what happens.

Gateway e-4100 thermal event

There can also be thermal sensors in your power supply, on your motherboard, and video card. Does your problem happen during gaming/heavy computing, after x amount of time, or totally randomly?

If your case conforms to the later ATX spec or some derivative thereof, don't block the hole in the side of the case.

Just some stuff I've run into, maybe you already know this!
