I have a Gateway GT5654 desktop that won't stop shutting down. I bought the computer brand new about 3 years ago, and I've never had any problems until now (I've even been running Norton 360 the entire time). It runs fine as long as I'm using it constantly, but everytime I leave it for like 10 minutes or more it completely shuts down. I have to start it back up and go through Safe mode everytime I need 2 use it again (usually around a dozen times everyday). It's about 2 drive me nuts so I'll really appreciate any help I can get.

It is possible that one of the three are going out on the computer, motherboard, harddrive, power supply, only a computer tech could tell which one.

PC won't turn on, small green light flashes on back of PC. 2 recent power outages in neighborhood.

Hate to say it, but it's likely your power supply. For years now, HP/Compaq, and Gateway/eMachines/Acer have all been putting 'Bestec'-brand power supplies in their brand-new desktops. I tired of replacing them because a) Brand-new computer owners strayed away from me if I warned them about it prior to 'the inevitable', and b) Often, power surges on these Bestec power supplies would also 'take out' the motherboard, and sometimes even hard drive (and data!). After years of seeing this, I reported this incredible catastrophic known-fail rate to a law firm in NY who is supposedly going after the manufacturers for this problem (or ignoring the problem). Power supplies can be bought for under $100, and any technician who is honest and affordable (and can also afford gas!) should be able to install one for under $50 (I do it for $30, for comparison). Those guys ARE out there--so search one out, and hopefully you'll be up and running in a few nanocycles (sorry, redundant error on my behalf--I'm a nerd, okay?).

Had a power surge... a of my external harddrives work; however, can't get either computer to power on... Gateway GT5654 or my wife's Gateway GT5408.. on my wife's motherboard, there is a green light......

You can get a powr supply for this, but if the surge went passed that and smoked the motherboard then your going to need to replace that as well but a new poer supply should shore this up and you can get them from frys.com,tigerdirect.com you be glad you did!

DVD+RW DRIVE STOPPED WORKING

Try rebooting your computer. I have a similar desktop and sometimes after a period of use the drive seems to power down - if I shut down and start up again it seems to work again.

If this doesn't solve the problem, check the connections inside the computer to make sure the drive has the data cable and power cable connected securely.

If you bought the Inspiron 3 days ago, contact Dell for warranty service and a replacement. If you just bought the drive itself 3 days ago, take it back or return it to the retailer you bought it from for a replacement.
