Under normal operation, the metal separator should be warm to prevent condensation from forming. Since yours is getting too hot, the condenser fan is likely not working. The condenser fan moves air through the unit, cooling the compressor and maintaing a desired operating temperature. You can check this by removing the lower panel at the rear of the refrigerator. You should see a small fan near the compressor (the round black unit). The cause could be a bad fan motor or a bad main control board. Unplug the fan and test if there is voltage going to the fan while the compressor is on. If not, the likely cause is a bad controller board. If current is present, the fan motor is bad. In either case it is an easy fix. The parts are available on-line.
