I thick antivirus has removed the files responsible for this. Please give the solution of this problem. How can I get it as it was when new.

I think you need to format your portable hard drive
but you can try these step to recover your data
type cmd on run menu (if you use windows xp: left click on start menu and you will see a run box, if you use windows vista or 7: right click on start menu and just type cmd on search program and files box)
you will be in a command prompt and it will be C:\\
then type the path of your hard drive (for example F:)
after the path show your drive
(for example F:) type attrib -s -h -r -a /s /d
wait until the process finish
now you can
open your portable hard drive by right click on start menu explore, not click on my computer, and if you can explore your files just recover it to your PC then you need to format it, but if it can't access any way what you need is just to format it.
To format your portable hard drive, you can use these steps
right click on my computer
click manage
in the storage tab click disk management
right click to the path of your portable hard drive
click format
let the file system on NTFS
thick quick format
click ok
let the process finish
notes: you will lost your data during this way

Hi amanvirdi198

The problem seems to be an infection of a virus which has changed the icon of your removable drive and also when you open it up you get the "open with" option by default.

Please follow the below instructions.

  • Select show all files option from the folder options which you find in the start menu the path is :-Start - Control Panel - Tools menu - Folder options.
  • In folder options go in the view tab and select show hidden and system files.
  • Once you are done selecting this option , all you need to do is open your removable drive by right clicking on it and select the 'Open' Option , Or if that does not work use the explore option as you have been doing already .
  • You will find that the hard disk now shows up the contents, so you need to find the autorun.inf file in the root drive , once you find it , you have to 'delete' that file, also delete any suspicious hidden .exe file which is in hidden state and of a small size , which is nothing but a virus which spreads as soon as you plug in your external hard drive and the autorun.inf file get's executed automatically.
  • Therefore once when you delete the autorun file , you should have your hard drive working properly.
  • The above method was the manual method , now if you want to delete the autorun problem automatically via a software , i recommend you to download autorun virus killer by clicking on this link http://bit.ly/k3dOve

Hope this helps...:)

I have just purchased a Seagate 500GB Desktop hard drive

There is software preloaded on the disk. If you have AutoPlay turned off in your system, it won't start automatically when you connect the drive. Just go to MyComputer and open the drive and you will find a setup file there to install the backup software (I think it's called Launch.exe).

I have Seagate - FreeAgent Go 500GB External USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive, I formated with MAC now is now detected by my PC. What should I do?

Open up the control panel with the drive connected, open administrative tools and computer management. Select storage and see if the drive is listed there. It will probably let you format it from there.
