Built in microphones for camcorders are notoriously bad at capturing sound well. There are 3 main things you can do to improve the volume levels:
It would probably be worth your time to check the camera's menu to make sure there isn't a microphone boost option. They generally increase the background noise a lot too, but if its there it should help.
Hey, I didn't specify a model. I believe the site tries to grab a "closest" match. Another solution might be to run it through a video editing software that lets you boost the sound. This will make the noise louder too (some do have noise reduction, though). Did you get a software disc with the camcorder? It might have an editor that will let you raise the volume.

Hi Jason,
Many thanks for your tips. Could I just confirm the model? (The one quoted in your e-mail is different)
It's DZ-HV575E. There are the ports and USBs for TV, HTML and the computer, but I can't see any for a microphone so I presume I can't attach an external mike. Strangely enough, there wasn't a single reference to bad sound volume in all the reviews I'd read on the internet before buying it. Also no microphone boost option in the menu.
