Hello there.

Nice to see more people trying out Linux :-)

From your description it sounds like the CD image you downloaded is not bootable. What i would do is scrap that CD and try the following, this is a guide that explains step by step how to take the downloaded .ISO file and burn it to CD, so that the computer can boot from it (known as a bootable CD).

Please click here for the information.

As Ubuntu has a partition program as part of the installer, you can use this to resize your Windows partition and install Ubuntu in the free partition left over.

This should get you setup in no time :)

Hope this helps.

Bought used need to by pass password

You didn't say what OS you are using.

1.To try and remove the password protection you can power off the PC.
remove the side panel and then remove the battery. Leave it for 10 minutes, refit the battery and then power up the PC. The password protection may have been removed.

2. Or at start up, enter the bios settings. You may be able to disable the password from within the settings.

3. If you're not bothered which OS you use, try a new install of XP or Windows 7.

If you don't have XP or Windows 7, ask a friend to download linux and burn it onto a dvd for you(or put it onto a usb flash drive). Put the linux dvd into your dvd drive and restart the computer. You will have the choice of completely erasing Windows, or installing Linux alongside Windows.

Linux is free. It will do everything Windows can do. Linux comes with its own version of 'Office'. The best free versions of Linux are Ubuntu or 'Mint'.

You can download Ubuntu here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Webcams do NOT work in Linux. Apart from that, Linux will do everything Windows can do (but free!) and you won't ever get a virus.

MY LAPTOP IS DOING NOTHING BECAUSE MY C DRIVE IS FULL AND IT WONT LET ME DELETE ANYTHING.. IVE TRIED THE DISC CLEAN UP BUT I DONT GET ANY FREE SPACE, IVE BOUGHT AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE AND MY LAPTOP DOESNT...

If you don't care about your data and don't need to back anything up, you can reinstall windows straight from the disc you have. If you do care about your data, you'll have to hook up another drive. Unfortunately, it seems like your problems are beyond the point of just hooking up a drive and copying files.

I'll give you two parts. First, how to reinstall windows. Second, how to copy files. Once again, if you care about your data you should skip down to the second part now.

1. Put your windows cd into your drive and reboot. Your screen should pop up with a message that says "Press any key to boot to cd." If it does not, reboot again, and this time go to your Setup screen. This is usually done by pressing the "F2" key or "DEL" key initially upon booting. Once you are in your setup screen, you need to change the Boot order to go to CD before it goes to Hard Disk.

Once you've booted up to your cd, you will be run through a windows installer that will let you partition and reformat your computer to do a new installation of windows.

2. The best way to copy your files when your hard disk fails or you can't recognize drives is to run a live version of linux. Ubuntu is what I use. Don't be scared now! Linux is very user-friendly, graphical, and easy to navigate these days. You don't need to know any code to run it or use it. You will need to download Ubuntu Linux on another machine and burn the CD, as I assume your computer won't handle downloading and burning a cd image. Once you have your Ubuntu CD, all you do is reboot with it in your drive and choose to Try the live version of Ubuntu. This will not take up any hard drive space and it won't overwrite your files. Ubuntu will simply be running in your memory space and allow you to access your computer and external drive so you can backup your files.

Good luck!

USB mouse won't work under XP in a dual boot Ubuntu GRUB 1.5

It has the latest mouse driver (logitech setpoint 4.0). Before installing Ubuntu the setup worked w/ SUSE/XP using GRUB dual boot. After installing Ubuntu XP does not see the usb mouse. Even Logitech setpoint does not have the mouse setup/configuration option. It appears that at boot it does not recognize the mouse or disables it. The BIOS has the usb keyboard and mouse enabled. Currently, I have two mices one for xp and either mouse will work under Ubuntu.

Unix installation

Do you want unix or Linux? Since you said linux, you need to know which flavor you want. SCO, and others, look on google for the different flavors.

I have ubuntu linux and I am writing you from it now. I love it, it's very nice working with Windows.

See this link for all the downloads.

When you download and burn the Linux ubuntu, just run the disk in your windos and it will start to setup the dual boot and other things. Mine was EEEEASY!
