I have a very anoying problem with my laptop, when i start up my laptop, pop in the cd, it does not recognize a cd and does not do auto play, if i look in device manager it doesnt even see a cd-rom installed, so i restart the computer, and still does it, then one day i try it again and all of a sudden it sees it and auto plays fine just how it should, as long as i leave the laptop on its fine, but as soon as i put it to sleep or shut it down and start it up again its gone, iv tryed finding new software with no joy,
iv tryed uninstalling it, then switching it off, then on again so it auto loads the hardware, and sometimes it works, and even tryed another cd-rom from my spare laptop, which worked, but only the once, im out of ideas, hope you can help
The exact same thing happens to me all the time. I don't have a solution I need one. As far as I can tell the only way out of this is to leave the PC world and switch to Mac. Vista is trashy anyway. The exact same thing happens to me all the time. I don't have a solution I need one. As far as I can tell the only way out of this is to leave the PC world and switch to Mac. EXACT SAME PROBLEM! Why is it that ACER (whom I thought a pretty dependable company, up till now) does not recognize this as an issue and post a fix? If ANYONE has a solution, please let me know! delete your driver for said cd rom. Then go online and find the updated driver and re-install. Usually solves things like missing cd roms and cameras, etc.
As the computer switches on and the Acer logo is shown there should be a sequence that has to be pressed to enter the bios setup eg; F2 or F10 ,press it and go in the setup program ,on the main page it has your laptops information such as how much memory you have ,processor speed hard drive etc.
See if your CD ROM drive is listed ,also check the boot (or start up) device tab in that bios setup program to see if it's listed there with your hard drive.
If it is not listed then it has failed and will have to be relaced or has become loose and is not making correct contact(which is rare to happen ,in this case it has to be removed and reinserted again).
If it still has warranty then you should send it back.
You can try deleting upper and lower filters. This solves many CD/DVD drive-related problems. The steps are outlined here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/
it could be an issue with the IDE controller detecting your CD-ROM have it replaced. this issue happens not only on Acer but on other brands too. It could be because Laptop CD-ROM's are not built tought like Desktop CD-ROM's.
If you lost your cd-rom drive (device) then you can buy new from pc shop, but if you lost your drivers or software then you can download latest drivers from support site http://global.acer.com/support/download.htm
Is the hardware listed in the BIOS? When the computer first starts up hit a key to get in the BIOS (Esc, F2 or F10 are most likely). If it's not listed in the BIOS then it's likely a hardware problem. Try checking the connections to make sure it's plugged in and getting power.
If it is listed in the BIOS, it's likely a problem within Windows. Check Acer's website for known issues with the cd-rom.
open cd rom tray.open laptop lcd screen flat, remove the 2 screens on the back of the hinges.carefully remove the bezel(just above the keyboard, with the power buttons etc )from right to left.remove 2 screws securing keyboard.you will see one screw that holds the cd/dvd rom in place.remove screw, pul on tray carefully, cd rom will slide out. replace with new cd rom.
