1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem

I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla with 4 speed auto overdrive transmission. Whenever I first drive the car after it has been sitting for a few hours or more, the transmission refuses to shift into overdrive. After the first couple of mile, the transmission shifts into overdrive normally. What is the problem? the car has only 6500 miles on it. The dealer says it is "normal" for the car to do that. ...I personally don't think that is true! This problem happens in both cold and warm weather 2005 Toyota Corolla CE Automatic with 36,000 miles. The "check engine" light now on. Transmission "jumps" quickly when shifted into "reverse". After you shift into "drive" it "jumps" quickly again when you hit 10 mph, and you can feel jumps when it shifts automatically at the next gear shifts. The vehicle still functions well and all gauges register normal, including the "temperature" gauge. Does the timing chain need to be adjusted? What about a bad sensor? I didn't change out the spark plugs at 30,000 miles but I don't think that's a factor in this. Other than this strange experience the car is in excellent condition.

Went to South Coast Toyota and they covered my car under WARRANTY; 2005 Corolla CE.

Turned out to be a "Computer, Engine Con" sensor of some type.
Without warranty you'd be looking at about $ 830.49!

    Thanks for your suggestions anyways!

Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.

The shift modulator in the transmission is dirty or defective. You will need to have it professionally inspected and repair. It my be just a dirty valve body that can be removed and cleaned. If your lucky and that is all it is cost $200-$300.

Have you been changing the transmission fluid according to factory spec?

I hope this helps. Please post feedback.

I'm wondering if i can swap a 3 speed auto transmission for a 4 speed with overdrive in a 1996 corolla standard model. Whether I'd have to change computers or if its even worth it.

The guys that know if this is possible are the wrecking yard guys. You need to call a few of them and see if it is possible. You will need the new flywheel, clutch and clutch release items.

What is the meaning of L, H, D on the automatic gearbox of Toyota Rav4 1994 - 2000

Hi:
Those designate the three different speeds on the auto transmission. If you select D, it automatically shifts thru all gears as conditions require. If you select L, it will stay in Low gear, or first, and if you select H, it will shift thru all gears except the overdrive gear.

How to use the overdrive on the auto.transmission.

the overdrive button on your automatic transmission is for cruising on the highway basically like having another gear for better economy careful not to use it when your not on the highway because lugging the car in overdrive when its not needed will cause higher fuel consumption other than that you should have no problems just get out on the highway and push and away you go

I have the same problem with my 95 Toyota T100. My O/D off light started flashing when my speedometer cable broke this week-end. I assume the electronic transmission is using the speed data to manage the overdrive.
Have your speedometer problem fixed and your flashing light will turn off.
