HI: This is an indication of a bad optics engine that need to be replaced. The LCD's inside the unit are going bad. The only way to repair this is to replace the Optics engine. You can check for a new engine at www.tristatemodule.com they have rebuilt engines for very low cost.
When your red light blinks four times on the Sony KDS-R60XBR1 60 inch HDTV, this is an error code for a stopped up fan. You will need to check the ASU board to verify Fan1-4 power to the fan is supplied, next check the fan connector to make sure it is properly connected, and finally make sure the fan is not caught in the wires or harness.
I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working. The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode. Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it. Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced. If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp. The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual. I hope this helps you.
If you are positive that the fan is still running and that it isn't an over heating issue, I would venture to say you need a new dlp lamp. Your model uses a Sony XL 5100 dlp lamp. You can grab one over at DLPLamps.com.
I had the same problem
if it is blinking 4 times like I think it is... it is a problem with one of the fans (there are 4) in your TV..
It is a simple fix... try using an air canister to clean them. It will require some disassembly though.
