Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera Logo
Posted on Jan 13, 2011

When I turn the camera on and look through the viewfinder, it's black. Also, if I flip open the little screen, it is black. It does show the little icons, but it's as if the lens cover is still on (which it is not). I am able to review pictures that I have taken in the past, but any new picture I snap, is just black (just shows what I see - black). Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem.
It started with the recurring "change batteries" problem - which was solved by using non-rechargeable batteries.
Now everything is working fine except there seems to be no light coming through the lense. Everything except reviewing mode is black and all my pictures are completely black. I dont know where the problem is. Could be the ccd. Might take this to the camera shop but im expecting it will cost over $100 to fix... any help?

When i open my camera to take a picture all i get is a black view. i cannot see anything on the display or through the view finder.

Does your camera also have an optical viewfinder? If so, chances are that you accidentally pressed the button that turns the screen off to save battery power. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. For your model camera, read the user manual to find out where this button is. On Canon cameras, it's usually a little button labeled DISP or DISPLAY. Just press it oonce to turn the screen back on again.
But if the above doesn't help, have you tried downloading photos taken when the screen is black? Are these photos also black? If so, chances are in this case that you are experiencing a stuck shutter. This is also very easy to remedy (see this).

I received a Leica Digilux 2 from a relative and i cant seem to see anything thru the viewfinder or the lcd screen. Its just black. Is the shutter not open? I can see all the numbers and settings around...

Open the back of the camera. **** the camera as if you were advancing the film. While looking in the back, push the shutter release, like you were taking a photo.
You see the mirror flip up and glimpse a flash of light as the camera cycles.
If you do not see the mirror flip up and return, the camera needs serious repair..
As for the LED Display, put some new batteries in it.

When I turn on my camera the LCD screen is balck and I cant see anything thruough the lens. It does take pics because when I upload the disck Ic an see the new pics

Double check if the viewfinder is operable (not the LDC but the little thing you look through with one eye above it). Try pressing the display button to flip through the different modes as you're looking through the viewfinder. If the viewfinder does work (and the LCD screen doesn't come on as you're scrolling through the modes) then it is most likely dead (broken). If the viewfinder works, you're can still use the camera otherwise it's probably time to get a new one.

Display screen no longer works while taking pictures

Sounds like they accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of the camera. This manually turns the screen on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time with the camera turned on.

Camera screen remains black when I turn on shooting mode

Turn the camera on. With the screen showing, press the DISP button and this will give you a selection of different screen views i.e. squares for aligning shot squarely; black - thru viewfinder only; etc. Different modes will give you different screen displays i.e. P setting screens are different to when you have the camera set on AUTO.

Hope this helps.

KODAK eASYSHARE c530 BLACK SCREEN DOES NOT TAKE PICTURE

You may still be able to take pictures with your black screened Kodak camera. This problem occurs in the line of Kodak EasyShare digital camera models.

When you turn on your Kodak EasyShare digital camera, turn off the LiveView function. Take a picture using the small-windowed viewfinder (this is not the LCD screen). Also, try zooming in and out.

After taking a picture, review the picture to see if the picture has been taken. Then turn on LiveView and occasionally the LCD screen should no longer be showing a black screen.

Black Screen

Can you shoot? battery might be low taking it to "save-power" mode. Try hitting "DISPLAY" to force the LCD screen to show.
