If you ripped an entire DVD, then you should be able to point VLC to the root folder containing the VIDEO_TS folder and it should start playing your ripped DVD from its menu system just like if you were watching it on your television.
Otherwise, you will have to create a playlist to play files in order.
If the dvd is stopping, check the recording setting as you may of set it to standard play, which is about 2hrs, set it to extended play for 3 hrs or longplay for 4 hrs and super long play for 6hrs
I believe that something is wrong with the video file you are playing. remove it from your ipod and try reloading it again. it sounds like maybe a format problem or just a damaged file.
When you say turns off do you meen power switches off or just stops playing.A good test is to play a cd,if this plays ok the problem is more than likely laser related and with the cost of replacing the laser being so expensive,it can be cheaper to replace player itself.Have you tried cleaning the lens assy with cleaning disc??
Sometimes this unit gets "confused" - not sure why -- but try first using a CD cleaning disk and let it start and stop a couple times (sometimes lens gets dirty and does this) - if that doesn't help then try unplugging unit and leave unplugged (from wall socket) for about 30min then plug in, set local time and then see if the disks play okay - sometimes this "resets system"
