My Samsung BD-P1600 will play
It is not the player you need to reset, it is the rental DVD's. They are encrypted with a code to limit the amount of time they can be watched, thereby protecting them from being stolen or not returned. Send them back to the rental company and rent the same movies again. That is your only solution. Your player will play whatever is put into it. I hope this helps.

Is it more likely to have a bad hdmi port or a bad
Try replacing the HDMI cable first, and see if it makes any difference to the result. This is the SIMPLEST method of troubleshooting and you can do this easily - takes a few minutes of your time. Hopefully it's just the cable and not something a bit more serious that could prove expensive in terms of repair; e.g. one of the HDMI ports (i.e. on your TV or other devices) not making a firm connection to the board internally (which is rare). Whenever I come across a HDMI issue like this, or A/V input signal loss, I go for the most logical and obvious thing - checking the cable(s) first as a matter of course. Replacing any or all suspect cable(s) usually fixes the problem first-time around.
