Most of the time laptop overheats due to the accumulartion of dust on the vents.
You can clean it by blowing a can of compressed air into the vents and thus cleaning it.
Still if it continues to overheat- please elevate the laptop properly i.e work on it keeping it on a hard surface so that there is proper passage of air from the laptop.
Lastly make sure that the fan beneath is running properly i.e - you can hear the sound of the fan.
