I assume it is on the black screen with the empty battery. If it doesnt come up with the little lightning bolt to show it is charging then it is likely the cable or charger are dead. try laptop USB charging port instead. Note I have had faulty cables that would lock up each USB port tried until I rebooted. try a friends charging rig that you know works. Another thing to check, is pocket fluff in the charge port which may prevent you inserting charging cabel correctly.
the laptop must be turn on when you connect the adapter. If you feel that something is smelling again, is sign that the power supply inside of the computer is faulty, go to the repair shop for fix it. However you can RUN the software diagnostic comign with the computer of download from the website manufacture supplier God bless you
Laptops (esp. older ones) should never be left plugged in 24/7. You need to stop using the charger (the problem is only in the charger and NOT the laptop?) and replace it. The burning smell is something overheating which can lead to a fire and sparks are rarely a good sign.
I'd cut the cord on the charger, so it can't be used again and replace it.
If you smell some thing burning from the charger get a replacement from somewhwre like Maplin. If you smell something burning from the laptop then take it to the PC shop an get expert advice.
to wlumbria... hey listenup... if ur connecting ur pocket pc to the cradle it is not only used for the flow of data bt it also charges ur pocket pc... bt the chargin is quite slow it will keep on showing the red lite as compare to an charger it will charge fast and the red lite will turn green... so wht i suggest charge it with a charger not with a cradel if stil it doesnt wrk try changing the battery...!!!
FYI, replacing the battery did not solve the problem of the battery refusing to charge. Instead, I've spent $30 at batteryship.com and since I've opened the battery I can't return it. There must be a software or hardware failure that's preventing the unit from charging the battery.
When you smell burning silicon thats a sure sign you are going to need a new one. Sounds like some pretty severe damage to chips if it smelled up the whole car. But the battery charging light still working is a good sign, which means its not a total loss.
