Water does not drain

Hi,

My washer does not drain the water. It does do the spinning but when its time to drain it does not do anything. Could this be a plumbing issue or machine? Please help.

This is most likely the machine... if a machine is loaded real full, small articles of clothing can get spun out of the inner perforated tub and into the outer tub. That's where the drain line connects to the pump. Small socks and other small clothes block the drain line (allowing the machine to spin but not drain).
If you feel up to the challenge of pulling the front panel and the top off the machine you can check for articles in the outer tub by "fishing" with a piece of coat hanger wire with a small hook bent on the end...
Also check IN the pump because sometimes the pump will "**** a sock" into it and block water drainage....
If the house plumbing is blocked, the machine will be pumping water out the drain hose and the stand pipe will back up and you'll get water on the floor or in the catch pan....
So it sounds like theres a blockage in the machine tub or pump.
I rate this type of fix about a 3 on a 1to5 scale of difficulty ... not too difficult but you need a little ability to pull it off. Good Luck on this.. let me know if you "catch" anything.

Machine - either the filter between the drain pump and exit to waste pipe is blocked - extract, clean & replace or the pump has failed. It may be going round [u can see this underneath the rear and hear it ] & if so then the impeller blades in the pump are worn out - renew pump

  • Rod Davies Sep 23, 2009

Before spinning, you should hear the water pump draining. If not replace it
If you hear it working then either the blades in the pump are worn out - replace OR the inline filter between the drum & pump may be blocked - remove & clean

  • Rod Davies Feb 08, 2010

1st check the drain filter usually at the front at the base & clean.
Next is the drain pump underneath at the back - does this rotate. If not it's a replacement pump

Your pump could be shot in your washer. you can remove the hose coming out of your washer in back and see if water is being discharged as it spins...nothing coming out..need new pump. but if does come out check plumbing drain for plugs

Sound like your pump is not working, check the wire connections, or it may have to be replaced

  • Bucky Jan 27, 2011

I had this exact problem and it was easy to fix. There was a penny stuck inside the drain hose that connects to the water pump. It was stuck about 2" inside the hose at the point where the hose tapers, next to where it connects to the water pump.

Lay the unit on its back exposing the bottom. Now remove the two hoses (one large, one small) connecting to the water pump and check them for blockage. Also, remove the water pump and look inside it for blockage. Mine had a rubber band and some thread wound around the water pump shaft.

Its the machine. If it was a plumbing problem you would have water all over the floor. Try this, When its time to drain Lift the lid, then lower it back to the closed position if it drains, the problem is either the timer or the transmission and pump. I had one that would not drain unless I lifted the lid. I replaced the timer $75.00 and it did not fix the problem. I finally replaced the machine.

SOURCE: Washer fills with water then stops, will not spin

if it's running (making noise) but not moving it's the coupling between the motor and trans$13.00 part if it is just sitting there quiet it's probly the lid switch is broken this only applies to top loaders

Washer won't fill with water

Hi Allen, this is JK. I see that you are having trouble with your washer (FEX831CS) not spinning or filling with water. For the washer not spinning, check the drain hose length and make sure there are no restrictions. The concern could be with the timer or the drain pump. For the washer not filling, I would check the water pressure, pressure switch and the water inlet valve. If all of these suggestions pan out and the problem still persists, think about what may have happened prior to this occurrence. For instance, did you notice any error codes, odors, or other strange functions prior to this issue? If you are still having these issues and can think of anything in particular, please feel free to reconnect.

The washer fills up with water and doesn't do anything else. the water is still in the washer.

check the lid switch, set the timer on spin, open the lid and stick a screw driver into the slot where the lid strike normally would close down into, push up and down it should make a clicking sound and the washer should start to spin and drain out the water,if it doesn't click ,spin and drain the lid switch is bad.

Washer had stopped at the spin cycle and had a long beep. I bailed out the water and layed the washer over a bit to check the hoses for any blockage. I even vaccumed the hoses out which reveiled no clog....

Hi just read you posting.1st--Look underneath the machine---, Does your machine have the pump with a red or black fan on it? Or do you have the other type?Have you tried advancing the cycle to spin to see if it draining any water out?Is it draining any water at all?If it is not draining and you have the pump with the red or black fan, turn the fan a few times to see if you can loosen it.If it was tight and you loosened it put it back upright and turn it on to a spin cycle to see if it will drain. Please reply with additional information and I can help you rectify this problem.

Water doesn't drain

you could have a bad drain pump.
have you checked the hoses that come from the bottom of the tub to the drain pump for anything that might be stuck in there, also check the hose that comes off the drain pump to the wall and look for an obstruction.

WASHER WILL NOT DRAIN WATER KENMORE WASHER APPROX 9 YRS OLD

Does the tub spin without draining?

This JUST happened to me last night. Opened washer after a load and still full of water. Fifteen spins later, still about an inch of water in tub...
RepairClinic.com suggests checking the hoses from the washer tub to the drain pump for anything clogged in it. (WARNING!!! As soon as you remove one end of the hose ANY water remaining in the tub will come RUSHING out if not clogged. I was prepared for water, but not a rush of water.)
If there is no clog in that hose, remove the drain pump and check for something in it.
(My pump was burning up because some how a plastic stick got into it. I am waiting on the new pump now.)
If there is nothing in the first hose or the pump, see if anything is in the hose leading to the drain.

If not, they suggested something either purchasing a new pump as it may have quit working or something may have gotten stuck in between the tubs. This requires tearing apart and sometimes special tools.

Water is full in washer and wont drain or anything??

mostly drain problem or spin problem. It won't drain If your washer won't drain, check these:

It spins, but doesn't pump
It doesn't spin or pump
It pumps, but the water returns
It spins, but doesn't pump If your washer spins but doesn't pump the water out, the drain line is probably clogged. In many washers, a small sock or other piece of clothing can get between the clothes tub and the outer tub that holds the water. If the clothing gets between the tubs, it may then get into the drain hose that's attached to the pump--or even into the pump itself. If it's in the pump, you need to remove the hoses from the pump and pull the item out.

To remove the sock from the outer tub port, open the washer's main access panel and remove the large-diameter rubber hose that connects the pump to the bottom of the outer tub. Then, using needle-nose pliers, try to grab and remove the clothing through the port.

Sometimes you can't remove the stuck clothing from below. Then you have to remove the agitator, top of the outer drum shield, and inner clothes tub. This isn't easy to do--and you may need special tools--so you might be happier getting a qualified appliance repair technician to do the job.

If the drain line isn't plugged, the problem may be with your pump. Even if the pump appears to be turning, the internal impeller may be broken. If so, you need to replace the pump.

It doesn't spin or pump If your washer doesn't spin or pump water out but the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley. If so, you need to replace the pump. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it.

It pumps, but the water returns If the water that pumps out of the machine goes back into the machine after the spin cycle, your washer may be siphoning the water from a laundry tub that has a slow drain, back into the washer. The usual remedy for this is to improve the draining of the laundry tub. (Is something stuck in the drain?) Also, check for these problems:

  • If the drain hose reaches more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub, cut off the excess.

  • If your drain hose is lower than the washer's cabinet, install an air gap/siphon break assembly.

Washer does not remove water in final spin

If washer hums when it should spin, and the washer will not drain, you may have 2 issues.
First check that the drain pump, drain hose, and wall drain are free of debris.
The washer may not spin properly if the drain system is not operable.
Once you are sure the washer drain pump, drain lines, wall drain, and drain hose is okay, run a test wash.
If the washer hums but now drains, you fixed one issue.
If the washer still hums, you may have a bad belt, motor coupler, motor itself, etc...
Check parts for wear and replace as necessary.I pulled the drain impeller and found a sock from my little guy stuck in there. Fixed!
check all water outlets to make sure there is nothing blocking the pipes.
