If the dvd player is old it maybe the laser pickup lens dirty you can clean the lens but you have to be very very careful if you do try put no pressure on the lens
get a cotton bud/q-tip and clean the lens very gently you will not see much dirt but lite cleaning will remove a film from the lens
I hope this helps
some players won't play burnt discs. If you are using a factory made disc and you still get this, then you can try and clean laser lens with rubbing alcohol and cotton swab. If the cleaning doesn't work, then the laser lens circuit will need to be replaced.
The unit can recognize that a disc has been loaded but can not read the contents. This can be as simple as a dirty lens or more drastic like failing optics. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails to correct the problem and a music CD will play OK, then the optics are failing. DVDs require more laser power to read than a music CD.
this is exactly response I would like to hear - an expert opinion!
What I did with help of 1mm-wide screwdriver:
1) There were two surface-mount potentiometers marked with C1 and D. I tried first D. Turned it clock- and counterclockwise by about 45 degrees. 2) After each turn I opened and closed tray to force the player read DVD disc. 3) It did not help, "NO DISC", then I tried the same with C1, and again, no luck. 4) Finally, I came back to D and turned it by about 180 degrees in one direction. IT WORKED!!!
Moreover, seem that now player reads content of the DVD discs faster then before. Probably manufacturer did not really adjust it properly and upon the time something has degraded, so it failed eventually.
