If you want to fix it yourself go to partsexpress.com and buy a new headphone plug. You can go to radio shack, but their headphone plug is very large but you won't need to solder anything. Cut the wires and strip off the plastic. You will see very small wires coated in red and blue if I remember correctly. You will need to separate all little wires so the colors are together. The color coatings need to be removed. Put them in the flame of a lighter for just a quick second. The coating will burn off. Scratch off the excess with your fingernail.
You will need to plug the new headphone plug into an ipod and touch the wires to the connectors to figure out which wires are for the left and the right speakers.
Solder the wires to the new headphone jack. You will find the partsexpress jacks are much better than the original.
If you use the radio shack plug you may want to put a little hot glue with a glue gun around the wires before you close it put or the wires will pull out easily. The parts express plug, link below, has a tight grip on the wires and there is no need for glue.
