I just bought the Bose Companion 5's about three days ago. The volume for the control pod didn't work from the moment I got them connected. The headphone jack and everything else works fine, it's just the volume wheel. I have to control it by the main volume on the computer. Do I have it hooked up wrong or is it just the control pod. The thing is brand new for crying out loud. Thanks for the help. Kelsey
I had the same problem right out of the gate, the volume dial on my control pod for my Companion 5 wasn't working, however, the touch pad and LED worked. I called Bose customer service and was instructed to:
First, unplug the power directly at the back of the woofer while the unit was on;
Next, I was instructed to unplug the control pod, visually inspect for any damage/defect;
Finally, re-seat the control pod on the back of the woofer and then lastly plug the power cable back into the woofer.
It worked like a charm. I hope this is helpful!

Same thing happened with me on my Mac Book pro and then on my Dell Desktop.
Then I realised something.... I had plugged the USB in whilst the light on the control pad was RED in muted mode. So firstly I unplugged the USB from the PC, waited a little while, pressed the control pad to be lit GREEN, then plugged it back in. Hey presto worked fine.
You could also try removing the Human Interface Device driver from the Device Manger listing, open a few up and look for the one which says Location 0 (Bose USB Audio) and in driver select 'Uninstall'
Hope that works for you, it had my about to pack it up and ship it back!!!! Bets of luck O:)

I have exactly the same problem.
Have you found the cause yet? I'm still looking for a sollution.
I have the same problem my pod got crushed.
The control pod do not work, I can not control volume and use the touching function.
Just connected the Companion 5 and the volume wheel won't work just volume from my mac and pc any solutions
I've had a Bose Companion 5 Computer speaker System (purchased in the UK) for just over 2 years. Admittedly, I now live in a hot country (Malaysia), but the black volume ring on the control pod has now started to go really sticky. The plastic seems to be in meltdown mode. You'd expect Bose to have tested their equipment in all climates.
Awesome fix dude!
This worked for me Thank you so much! LOL I was pricing new ones on Ebay and they are well over 100$ You saved me good money
