Re Presario CQ61 312sa....since my son loaded new MS Office software he has been unable to access the wifi internet on the laptop. The signs are good - it says he IS connected to the internet and all the...

This laptops processor isn't the best around, and having 7 and MSOffice (both resource hogs) could be simply freezing the computer up. If you have a program (or know how) to allow you to remove MSOffice from the startup process it might solve your problem.
If you have CCleaner, Advance System Care, Revo uninstaller, al of these can remove items from the boot process (or startup).
Or you can use msconfig. You don't need programs like Office, Adobe, or any other program (besides anti-virus and firewall), that you can invoke by double clicking a desktop icon to use. Removing these 3rd party apps will not keep you from using them. Adobe update, java, update, etc. are not necessary. Just don't remove programs that are listed as SYSTEM Programs. Start with MSOffice and then see if you can get on the internet. If so, download ASC here:
It's a free app with tons of useful tools and only about 8MB in size. This will help you to choose what programs to remove from startup thereby freeing up resources. It will be under the System Admin Tools tab. Here are instructions for MSConfig if you need them.
Click the "Start" button on your taskbar and choose "Run."
Type msconfig in the command prompt.
Type "msconfig" (without quotes) in the box and click "OK."
The "System Configuration Utility" window will pop up. Choose the "Startup" tab. This tab shows you all the programs or processes that run when your computer starts up each time. Once there, expand the width of the "Command" area so you can see more.
Look through each entry in the "Command" section. Note any items that begin with "C:\Program Files\". These are definitely not essential to start up.You can uncheck any items whose command begins with "C:\Program Files", but there may be some that you'd like to keep based on what program is starting up. Disable any program you don't recognize.
Some items will not have any information--uncheck those.
Uncheck any of the Program Files items you wish. If you see any items with nothing listed in the Command or Startup Item section, uncheck those too.
Click okay to finish. You will be asked whether you want to restart or not. It is recommended that you restart right away, but it won't hurt anything if you choose to wait.
Be sure to check the box before clicking OK to avoid getting the message every time your PC starts up.
When your computer restarts the next time, you will get a message saying that you have changed the way Windows starts up. Don't be alarmed! Check the box that says "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts." Congratulations, you have just streamlined your PC's startup process!
Tips & Warnings
DO NOT uncheck items that start with "C:\WINDOWS\"
Use your best judgment when deciding what startup items to uncheck-- if you have any doubt at all, just leave it checked!
Hope this helps

Have the driver disk handy and let the computer re-detect the modem. If it doesn't find it, remove the modem from the slot it's in and insert into another slot. the re-detect if it doesn't see it on boot up. It the computer still doesn't fing the modem, you may have a bad modem.
