This sounds like a bad ram module and possibly a bad cpu.
Usually with a bad cpu you will actually get a bit more life out of it before it stops. Bad ram can stop it cold.
A bad cpu is ually caused by overheating in a laptop. You may have noticed it run slower or be a bit glitchy before it stopped. As it overheats the cpu will slow itself down to try and protect itself from damage. If the cpu is damaged then you need to replace it.
Bad ram can have a few causes. Overheating can damage the module or just cause it to work loose. So the first thing to check or try is to reseat the ram or switch it. If you have two module you want to put the #2 one in the #1 spot. The #1 ram will be the bad one if you have zero activity as you described. If it were #2 then you would be running but having weird lockups and other problems when you start using that part of the memory. It hits the bad bit and poof something happens. Because it is in a laptop the ram is subject to heat cycles that will work a module loose which is why sometimes all it takes it reseating them. They also tend to get banged around more so that can also shake it loose. If you put the #2 in the #1 slot and don't put the #1 in, then you can eliminate the #1 or #2 as the cause. If it works, then try putting just the #1 back in. If that works then it was just loose. If it doesn't it is bad and you need to replace it. This is a good excuse to add more ram as you are buying a new piece and its pretty cheap right now.
If the ram swapping doesn't get it working then it will be a cpu problem and possible a main board issue. To swap out the cpu you need a replacement cpu and need to disassemble the laptop. If you have to get that done then you can spend a good chunk of money on the new cpu and labor. So you want to know what a new laptop is worth so you don't spend more than the old one is worth.. Fortunately the ram problem is the common one so with a bit of luck thats all it is.
Try reseating the memory / booting with only 1 stick and NO battery just AC adapter.
What happens?
Try with the hard drive and optical drive out too if the above changes nothing.
Let me know what happens...
