Hi, Not only should you replace the motor, but the thermostat and high limit should also be replaced with it now..
In your case the motor has gone bad...
There can be many reasons why your dryer will not start or turn...
The most common causes are the belt breaking or jumping off, or the motor going bad...
Here are a couple of tips that I wrote will help you to figure out why your dryer will not run...
Dryer Repair - The Dryer is not Turning
Dryer Repair - The dryer will not start

Hi,
Estimate on repairs vary so much in different parts of the country and whether or not you can find a "local" repair guy or have to use a franchised repair center.
The motor will be ball park 150 bucks and but the labor can vary so much....could be another couple hundred bucks...

There also is a high temp cutout in there and you may have burnt that out
What confused me is that statement about the burning odor... if the fuse burnt out the heating should not have been working either....so I assumed that the burnt smell was the motor...
That is the hardest part of me stting here interpeting a description and then trying to give advice...something that I think is cut and dried turn out to be something else...
At least your up and running and it hopefully was not as bad as you thought it would be...
Have a great weekend!!

The dryer is definitely heating up and the timer is working. I opened the front and cleaned out all of the lint (how did all of that get in there?) and disconnected and cleaned the exhaust. The belt is on and not broken. I am able to turn the drum manually. I activated the diagnostic test mode didn't get any error codes.
just want to make sure you saw what I posted in the comments earlier:

Also, can you give me a ballpark of what a repair like what you describe could run? thanks
Thank you. I scheduled an appointment with Sears and signed up for some sort of protection agreement - $198.00 for parts and labor. Not coming till Thursday though...
btw, i know what a thermostat is but what is a "high limit"?
Thanks again,
C
Turns out it was the thermal fuse and not the motor...
Sears was out today and had to replace the Heating Element because it stopped heating after a few loads ... works now.
Thanks,
C
