We have a hotpoint DLB3800SBLWW dryer. The door light comes on but the dryer won't run except in the "cool down" setting with the "press guard" knob turned to yes. I appreciate your help. John

only 3 wires on most dryers one is for light other to shut dryer off when opening if plugged in wrong. dryer will run with door open
light will stay on when door closed reverse them if that happens
some only have 2 wires don't matter on them
need whole model# for more info
If you look closely, there are 3 separate pins that must latch. One is a simple push-button style which latches no problem. The others are little prongs at the top and bottom of door. The bottom prong latches cleanly, but the top one will not latch because the door is a bit too flexible. Close the door normally, then firmly press on the top edge of the door. You will hear the final latch grab, then you press and hold the start button. The dryer starts normally.
The first thing I would check is the door switch. If it isn't closed the dryer should not start - although the timer would be active. If it won't tumble or heat then that is the first thing I would check and on Hotpoint that is a high failure rate.
507 is the thermal limit if open due to lint or other problems the dryer will not run.
Of course it could very well be a broken door switch. I recently worked on a Hotpoint dryer that was eating up clothing. I took some photos. Hotpoint dryer revamp
Sounds to me like a thermal fuse. The link gives you multiple scenarios and you can even order replacement parts. I have used it myself with success on washers and dryers. Good luck!
Have you cleaned the exhaust ducting? The duct that runs from inside to outside. Try that first. Sounds like your exhaust line is blocked. Also with the filter out get a flash light and look down the venting if alot of lint vaccum out. NOTE: Unplug the unit, wheather gas or electric.....and if it is a gas shut off the gas to the dryer before moving just in case something gets loose while moving. Hope this helps.
