If I have a new nuvi 1490 pre loaded with Europe and i want to use another map how do I do it without overwriting the preloaded map?

Go to www.garmin.com. If you haven't already registered your sat nav on the site you'll need to do so. You'll be asked to create a username and password. Write them down as you'll need them again. Once registered you'll be able to log in to My Garmin. Click on My Maps and you'll have an option to buy other maps. If there's not enough space for both maps you'll be able to select what you want.

If you have the map downloaded from the garmin website to your computer you could remove it and replace it later. However a better option might be to download the map of Europe to your computer and install it to a micro SD card. A 4 Gb card would hold the map of Europe and you don't risk losing your North America map. You can get details of how to set up the map on your micro SD card at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

Garmin nuvi 1300 Query
Usually they come preloaded with some maps and you purchase additional ones. Check the manual that came with it or the box and that should tell you which ones it has. Generally speaking a basic unit bought in the UK will come with UK & Ireland preloaded, more expensive unit may have UK, Ireland & Europe and the most expensive may have all three plus USA. It's unlikely you will have 'lost' your USA map. The unit should have a 'drop down' menu which allows you to choose which map to load. Hope this helps!

I need help installing a map onto a gramin sat nav
No. They are refering to maps sent from the computer to the Garmin device. Maps are not transferred off the SD card to the unit. Simply insert the SD card into the device and the Garmin will read the maps from the card.
to double check follow these steps
  1. Power on the unit with the card in
  2. Press Tools
  3. Press Settings
  4. Press Map
  5. Press Info (or map info)
This page should list out both your UK and Ireland maps(old as dirt) and your new Benelux and France maps as well

The nuvi 270 is the model that comes with pre-loaded maps of europe. The nuvi 250 only has North America. You can find the right maps on Garmin at: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/buymaps.do

You can purchase all of europe or select areas which are $50 dollars cheaper.

Going to Mexico and my garmin will not display it.
There are a variety of Garmin® GPS devices that come preloaded with mapping not just for the United States but also for Europe and Mexico. Any nuvi® that has 70 in the model number will have preloaded mapping for North America and Europe.

Example: nuvi 270, nuvi 370, nuvi 670, nuvi 770

Also, some specialty models will have preloaded mapping for North America and Mexico. These units include the nuvi 200 Mexico (p/n 010-00621-2A) and the Nuvi 260W Mexico (p/n 010-00656-37).

The 730, unlike the 930, doesn't come with European maps preloaded. You can find the most up to date Tele Atlas maps of the UK & Europe over at TomTom's Map Store.

tap on the wrench, tap on map, tap on about map, there you should see the base map checked, and the Europe map unchecked, uncheck the us map and check the europe map by tapping on the check box. leave the menu.
