Update the drivers for the communication. You can download from the manufacture's website of the EXT hdd.
They are usually under the download or support tab.
Just down the drivers, double-click on the file to install them into your pc, then restart pc then connect.

My computer don't see mt toshiba 500 GB external disk. I had Win XP with SP3 and my external disk is connected to a USB hub with 8 ports. I had a pen connected to that hub and the computer see it. But...

Your USB hub cannot provide enough power for your external hdd, you can try to plug it in directly to any free USB port for the mean time to check if its detected or not, if it has a power button ( which is not normal for regular USB powered EXT HDD) make sure that it is on, if its still not working try to use a different cable, a known good cable or plug it in to a different computer to check if its your USB port, or the usb cable or the ext hdd that is causing the issue

Hope this help.

I have a WD3200ME external drive..My OS is vista and it cannot install or read my drive..there's even no installation being done.. i think the drive is missing..what should i do?

Hi there,

Below are my suggestions:

1. Use a different USB port.
2. Try a different USB chord
3. Try the external drive to another working PC, if it is detected, there's a problem with your USB controller on your OS.
4. There's nothing detected, it could be that resource addressing is faulty. Go to START > RUN and type "compmgmt.msc". Under disk management , right click on the storage that doesnt show a drive letter.. click on Assign letter and choose any letter near T to Z to be safe. Click ok and exit.

Hope this helps or gives you the idea how its done

Dear Shaji,

I think u used File recover software for recovering the file. Same thing happened to me also. My brother got one HDD from his friend. I will explain u, how to recover or to detect HDD.

I have a suggestion.

I think u r believing in god. So first pray and put the HDD in USB port. After that also, if u are getting same issue means, you can give this HDD to some other great intelligent beautiful people... Like your MACHU (cousin)

HDD Problem

The info is not clear as to if it is a desktop or laptop . However what u could try is reseating the hdd and also get into BIOS by tapping F2 and u would find a option to restore defaults, after restoring check if the hdd is getting detected . Also make sure that external peripheral like Ext hdd and other usb devices are disconnected. Update once u have tried this.

XP not detecting MY HDD but 7 trail and linux freeware

Method 1 : Go to BIOS and set anything with SATA disable (usually find uns=der advance setting in IDE configuration setting).Save the setting.

Windows Xp will detect your hard drive now.

Method 2 : This days BIOS comes with only few thing to configure.if that's is the case.
Download SATA driver, here is the link

http://download.cnet.com/SATA-Driver-Intel-Ver-7-0-0-1020-zip/3000-2122_4-162224.html

you need one more software called "nlite" in order to integrate the SATA driver in Windows XP CD so that it recognize SATA drives.

Here is the link for nlite download

Two devices stopped working after plugging them into a powered usb hub: a laser usb mouse and a wireless network adaptor. Both were working fine when plugged into a regular usb hub. Got the powered hub...

the two device wont have any issue. but i would suggest to connect the ext. hdd directly to the sys. and it requires more power, and hub does not provide that much power which is required for ext hdd. you can try to connect only the ext. hdd to hub and check.

Ext.hdd can't be detected..

When you have the drive connected,go to your control panel, open up Administrative tools,Computer Management,Disk Management.See if drive is there. If it is, right click in drive space ,assign a drive letter.
If not,scan for new hardware.
You could also look at your usb port handler in your device manager.Update your usb controller, usb handler
