I have a Dell computer, and now the cdrom drive cant read the disc and dvd's will play but not very good.. I thought that maybe the drive was dirty and put a cleaner disc in it. But that made it worse.
It definitely sounds like a faulty drive. Usually on a DVD-CD combo drive, either the DVD or CD feature will fail, but not both at once. Luckily, this is not an expensive part especially if you are able to replace it yourself. Hopefully this helped

try other known good windows installer. if it boot, then the problem is in xp installer, if it not. try other external cd-rom drive. also be sure the disc rom drive are dvd rom drive because a cd rom drive cannot read dvd disc but a dvd rom drive can read cd rom disc installer
If your Drive is a CD-Rome drive, surely it cant, for the drive cant read dvd disc.
Replace the drive of yours with DVD-Rom or DVD-RW in order to play dvd disc, DVD-RW simply has the added capablity to burn on DVD discs
Simply change the ROM to DVD RW drive since this is an old PC and now days nobody uses a dvd rom but a dvd writer. It will be worth it since it can do all the functions and is also more hardy........sodeep
1.If you purchase an external USB CD drive you will not need to use your floppy discs for booting. 2. You can connect a USB CD drive to your system. 3. Your system will recognize any device plugged into your USB drive. 4. There is no CD drive available for internal installation in your computer. 5. With the USB CD drive plugged in and the windows installation disc inserted, your computer should take you through the setup program automatically.
1) it may just be a driver issue. look up the control panel / devices. if you see a yellow marker , then the drive is at fault . find the driver and install, then try again.
2) maybe the cdrom is dead , try change to another one.
3) if you dont have spare , plug in an external usb cdrom drive . this way , you can still do the update. many dell laptops use external usb cdrom.
