First check the obvious...ie (correct plugs, ports, and volume settings) If those are correct you may want to check the device manager to see if there is a missing audio driver. if you have XP it's easy just right click on "My Computer"->Properties->Hardware Tab-> Device manager. if there is an Exclamation Point ( ! ) or yellow yield sign that means that your driver is missing or out of date. To fix that, go to the dell website and download the correct driver. hope this helps
SOURCE: cpu upgrade dell dimension 5100
Whomever answered this before doesn't know what they are talking about. What matters is the technology used in the processor. Obviously you couldn't take a 775 Socket processor from a computer made today and put it in your computer. Your computer has to be able to recognize it. Your system most likely has a Pentium 4 (P4) Prescott Processor. I believe all Prescotts are 90nm technology and I know from other websites that the 5100 will take at least a 650 which 3.4Ghz which is no longer sold that I can find so you have to find it on ebay. Hope this helps!
SOURCE: Dell Dimension 5100 Fan Replacement
rearward removal, there are a couple of latches you have to push so you can slide it backward (towards the processor end) and lift it up, one of the latch is next to Hard Disk compartment and the other one is on the other side. dont forget to clean the thermal paste on the processor and heatsink and reapply new thermal paste when you put everyhing back.

SOURCE: How do I return our Dimension 5100 Dell Desktop back to it's original state? Lost the recovery CD.
Have you tried restoring your operating system to a previous restore point?
To do this click on start- all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore. Then choose a date from the calendar which corresponds to a time before you began to experience problems on your PC. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore your PC to its original state.
Note that a system restore will remove any programs which were installed AFTER the selected restore point date.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Can't boot up Dell 5100 Dimension, amber light flashes
When you mean the amber light, is that the blinking hard drive access light or the power light? Different cases have different colors on it. Mine has blue and green lights.
If you see the boot screen (bios) and then after it goes to boot, does it blink and hang?
This could be a simple operating system issue, hard drive or hardware/motherboard issue. If you could provide more information, that would help.
