SOURCE: cpu upgrade dell dimension 5100
Hi, according to the Dell website you have a LGA775 socket on your motherboard. Therefore, you can only buy processors that fit into this socket. Here is a list of some offered by Intel that will work: Celeron D 325 2.53 GHz Celeron D 330 2.66 GHz Celeron D 335 2.8 GHz Celeron D 340 2.93 GHz Pentium4 520 2.8 GHz Pentium4 530 3.0 GHz Pentium4 540 3.2GHz Pentium4 550 3.4 GHz Pentium4 560 3.6 GHz Pentium4 570 3.8 GHz The processors that won't work are the ones that are not compatible with this socket. Everytime you look up a cpu it will tell you which socket it is designed for. To buy a cpu you will need to decide: The brand you want. The speed of the cpu that you want. Extras i.e. Hyperthreading, etc. How much you are willing to pay for it. Then you can narrow your search as you stick within your limits. Let me know if you have more questions. Good Luck

might be a problem with the power button...try exchanging the power adapter and the reset adapter in your motherboard...this would become:
RESET BUTTON: as power button.
view your manual on where to find this adapters in your board.
SOURCE: Dell Dimension 5100 Won't start up
Hi
First disconnecting the power cord and re-seat all connections (Keyboard, Mouse espercially). Connect up the power cord and try powering the PC.
To help you troubleshoot a problem, Dell Dimension 5100 has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4" on the front panel. When the computer starts normally, the lights flash. After the computer starts, all four lights display solid green. If the computer malfunctions, the color and sequence of the lights identify the problem.
If the computer failed to start up check the diagnostic lights color and sequence and Check the link below for more info (Assuming you have another system that can access internet)

Alternatively, contact Dell Support with the diagnostic lights color and sequence to raise a service call if the system if under warranty.

I had a similar problem with my dell dim 5150 and after 3 days of intense research i found the problem. you see mine would not start either and all i had was the green motherboard light on and the yellow light on the power button blinking repeatedly, until i came a cross a post that said to check the USB slots, and so i did, turns out that after a very close look i noticed that one of the pins inside the USB slot were bent upwards and making contact with the metal hense not allowing the pc to boot. i used my wifes eyebrow plucking tool to straighten out the pin and wallah the pc boots up flawlessly now. so take a really close look at those USB slots and make sure all the pins are straight and not touching anything or each other. Good luck

Not really worth repairing...the unit itself can go as cheap as $110 for the entire pc. heres a link http://www.cedarpc.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=2947 while they are curently out of stock the price will only drop and a mother board replacment will be at least or more than that price...i would buy a new and add the hard drive from your old and maybe ram to the new...making it faster and larger for cheaper than the repair
