Chances are the updates included a patch to the firmware that blocks the ability to play counterfeit games. The reason a reset and reformat probably didn't work is because they DID do an update to the firmware which wouldn't be affected by any kind of format or reset. If it's true that some games came from the internet and have a possibility of being fake..that is more than likely the cause of the issue. The fact that it plays some games fine and not others really solidifies my conclusion.
Locate DrvSetup.exe on the cd/dvd drive and run it. you will need to have the cd/dvd for the game in the drive than right click on the drive click explore than a list of files on the cd/dvd will appear find the one that is DrvSetup.exe and double click it
your game has some corrupted files try to download it from another website or give me the name and ill give you a 100% correct game dont forget to rate
Connect the phone to computer and select Mass Storage Device instead of Nokia PC Suite and you would see a new drive in your "My Computer" right click on that select on Format. Review the settings and click on Start to start the format.
