You need to reinstall the sound card driver. If you have the restore/driver disc supplied with the computer, install it from there. If not, you must go the the website for the manufacturer and download it. You will need the model number and maybe serial number too to narrow down which you need.
When on the site, look for support, drivers, downloads or similar. You will then be asked for model/serial. Most will then ask which Operating System (XP, Win7, 2000, 98... etc).
Then look for the sound driver. Download that, and install via the included instructions. Reboot after. Should help. If not, it is likely a hardware issue.
