It should work fine, that's of course, if it actually is the switch, wires are OK, and it may be the "Logic" that the switch triggers to open/close, usually it signals a micro, that this "Port" has a GND, or +Voltage on it, and it then triggers, it may not be a simple switch. But in any event if shorting it out, works, then, YES you can indeed do that and control with the Power On/Off. But first try a replacement switch, and check ALL connections, and wiring first.
