I need to reformat my Acer Extensa 4220. I do not have the original discs nor is the acer empowering technology software on my system. Can i download empowering technology for free from anywhere? Or id there another solution?

Who did the wipe? A professional tech would have made sure that you got your original Acer operating system plus utils and the maintenance section of the hard drive. Take it back and have it done right. If Acer did this then send it back they should know better.

Basically the application isn't there, that's why when you press the "e" button on the computer it says ''the system cannot find the file specified''.

What you need to do is download the appropriate software from Acer support, download empowering technology here >>>>>>>>>>>>

Go there and download your driver .

Acer Extensa supports two model of HDD installation 1) AHCI and 2) SATA.

Windows Vista get installs on both but for Windows XP you need to Enable SATA option.

For that go into Bios, Change option of Hard Disk from AHCI to SATA. After that you can install both XP as well as Vista.
