Find a friend with an external monitor and connect the laptop to it. On your keyboard will be a combination of the fn key and one of the f keys above that transfers the signal to the external monitor. If you get a fine picture there, you'll know you can only have one of 3 problems.
1. Your screen inverter has shorted out
2. Your backlight has burned out insode the LCD
3. The LCD itself has failed.
You can make your choices from there. If you get NO picture on the external screen, you'll know the video chip on the motherboard has failed.
