Windows xp boots but the desktop will not come up

I have an ibm thinkcenter with windows xp professional sp3 and when i boot it up it boots normal until it gets to the point after it loads xp just before the desktop comes on the screen usually says windos xp system starting but now im getting just the windows xp logo and nothing will happen after that. the my computer icon and a few others were missing before i rebooted the computer to try to bring them back. i was messing around and accidentally deleted some registry keys. i do not have a boot disk or any repair disk to reformat my harddrive. what can i do to get my computer back to normal?

Hi,
Log in using SAFE MODE. While laptop boots, press F8 and it will prompt for which mode to login. Select 'SAFE MODE'. Once logged in try to restore the OS to a previous good restore point.
If you've a backup of the registry key, it will help better. Just restore the registry from the backup instead of going for an old restore point.
Please come back and rate my solution if this turns to be helpful for you or also if you need more clarification. Thnx

Then i would suggest you to get a bootable disk from internet and use your key to install the OS again. Do not format the any drive, let it be just an 'inplace' re-installlation. This could save the applications installed already. If even it wont work, then better you format and install.

Appreciate your response on my solution.

Sorry, Windows is corrupted beyond repair (you probably have a very nasty malware infection). A fresh full install is mandatory.
And next time use a better antivirus.

My computer only boots successfully after a forced shutdown.

Is it possible that you have installed winxp twice? You say that you installed XP Pro sp3 was that an upgrade from xp home? if so then you will need to uninstall one or both versions of XP then install only one.. Make sure you backup any important files first though

Windows XP Pro SP3 will not boot normal mode

This may be because you have the wrong drivers installed- i reccomend starting your computer up in safe mode and using system restore go back to a past restore point before upgrading to SP3

then update your drivers before upgrading to SP3
i reccomend drivermax.com to update drivers.

Hope i could help

IBM Blue Screen

I had the same problem with an Intellistation 6868 for years. It just wouldn't load XP but ran fine on Windows 2000 SP4. I tried 3 different XP Installation CD's with no luck. After several attempts at installing XP I bought a clean XP Upgrade from ebay.

It took me 3 goes to install it but eventually I got it in there. If you can get XP to start on the 6868 press F8 and start it in safe mode first then when it's booted fully, shut it down and and then start it clean again. It worked for me. I've been running it for 5 months now and it's fine.

I couldn't get it to work at all on the 6868's onboard IDE so I installed a PCI Raid Card and it boots fine on that.

System:
IBM 6868 52A M-Pro Intellistation
2 x Intel P3 866 CPU's 256 mb cache
2 GB ECC RD Ram
2 x Seagate 320 GB 8MB Cache HDD on a Sunix ATA133 PCI Raid Card
2 x Seagate 10000 rpm SCSI HDD on Adaptec Raid Card
