Have a witte's special j. serial # 38649 D. we know it was traded before 1934,but would like to know what year it was made. we would also like to know who made the gun. my grandpa traded a pig for the gun before my dad was born, then later gave it to my dad.
Guns marked as Witte's Special were PROBABLY made by Iver Johnson, and were marketed by Witte's Hardware in St Louis. A lot of hardware store brands made exact copies of famous guns, they looked great and they fooled a lot of people. The famous Westly Richards, was W. Richards, and was about $600 cheaper. LC Smith, was AC Smith, again, fooled a lot of people, anyway, I couldn't find the date of your gun, I believe it was a .410 shotgun, and wasn't too old when your grandpa got it. They are not worth very much. I'm surprised to see a serial number on that, most old guns didn't have numbers at all.Hope this helps.
