When the deck is clicking when you first power it up, reach inside and turn the capstans by hand and this should disengage the tape head assembly. The problem is the drive belts are slipping and need to be replaced. The door will not open because the head is engaged.
The internal mechanism is jammed and may need lubrication and or a new belt- this kind of problem happens all the time on light weight type transports.
