Is your DVD drive a Combo DVD ROM and CD Read/writer? If so it cannot burn DVD only reads DVDs and read and burn CDs.
If the program cannot find a DVD burner then either the burning software cannot support that model DVD burner ot the DVD burner is faulty.
To test the DVD burner, remove it and install it into another computer to test the burner to see if is faulty.

do you still have the software for your external dvd...if so...uninstall it....now start all over like it is brand new...reinstall and reconnect the dvd....this shoud do the trick...

all dvd movie take 2-3 hrs to burn (some even 4 hrs..depends on the lenght)...and for the future never just turn off any data transfering devices....not even your pc when windows is updating....

your DVD Rom drive cannot burn DVDs because it is not a DVD burner, DVD Rom drives are different from DVD writers, if you want to burn DVD you must buy a DVD burner/writer.

burning and cd requires a cd burner... the fact that you burn cds does not necessarily mean that you can also burn dvd's.. to burn a dvd you need to have a dvd burner unit installed. check on tray that comes out on you cd/burner if it says RW DVD.. if not chances are you only have a cd burner but is not a dvd burner.

You need to make sure to select "Finalise" in the options when burning a disc to be used on another player.

Where that option is will vary depending on what software you are using to burn it.

Maybe your dvd's are pirated.. some dvd only plays original dvd.

Do you have the right burning software, eg nero, and you need to have the right dvd type, eg dvd-r etc.

How old is your dvd burner? What model?
