I would be very very grateful if someone could please help me with this problem.
I have been using a Compaq Presario V3000 laptop for 3 years now. For the past month the charger wouldn't work until you wiggled it around gently while plugged into laptop.
If the charger moved from that 'wiggled' in position the pc would say that battery is low, recharge it now.
Now, the charger got really hot, stopped working and makes a buzzing noise when plugged in. But it does not work.
Should I just replace the charger or has there been some permanent damage?
Please help!!!
Thank you!!!
Unfortunately there are no perfect cables, and especially in case of a laptop, when you move it around a lot, roll the cable for travel etc. it gets bent a lot, especially in the place where the elastic cable goes into the hard plug or into the charger case. The conductors inside and the inner insulation finally break, giving at first intermittent connection (what you experienced before), and finally short-circuits the cable, resulting in charger damage.
You should be fine just replacing the charger, unless all this wiggling around didn't break the laptop power socket.
When looking for a replacement charger, note the voltage of the original (it should be exactly the same in the new one), the maximum current amperage (this should be same or - better - higher than original), and the size of plug.
Good luck :)

Thank you very much for your response - very helpful!
Just one more Q - is there anyway to find out if the wiggling around did in fact break the power socket on laptop without having to take the laptop apart?
I'm pretty certain the wiggling around was done gently. But the end bit of the cable that goes into the laptop got really hot before it stopped working altogether...Yikes!!
Thanks once again!
oh ok phew!!
will get a replacement charger as per your instructions!
Thanks!
