My xbox 360 stopped working suddenly yesterday for no apparent reason. I've determined that the problem is that the cd drive isnt spinning the disk. Per another entry i dismantled the console and tried to 'unstick' the rotor by spinning it, but no luck. I have the cd drive mostly dismantled and need to now how to make the cd start spinning again. Any thoughts?
The disk not spinning can be one of many things. first and foremost, did you have green lights on the ring or were there 3 red lights. If there were 3 red lights then you have hardware problems and we will need to get you the code of the problem. Now, if you have a green light then the problem most likely is that the laser has either gone bad or is out of adjustment. The voltage adjustment is not a hard thing if you have experience with a meter. HOWEVER YOU MUST BE VERY AND I MEAN VERY CAREFULL WHEN YOU HAVE THE COVER OFF OF A 360. It will take less than 5 minutes of run time to smoke the processor if you do not have all the airflow ducts and cover in place. TRUST ME ON THIS I repair game machines as part of my professional living. You can take a look at the laser and see if you get a red flashing of light when trying to read the disk. if you do not the laser is bad. If you do then it still may be out of adjustment. JUST BE CAREFUL TO NOT LOOK STRAIGHT INTO THE LASER YOU COULD DAMAGE YOUR EYES keep your eyesite off of a direct view. You will still be able to see if it lights up.
Another option is that the motor is bad. to know this you will have to wire the motor to a power supply and test it out. if it spins when hooked to an extenal supply then it is good.
It could also be that the circuitry on the motherboard that tells the motor when to spin is no longer working right. You should get some type of error on the screen or red lights if this is the case. but not always I have had 2 machines that said all was well when the motherboard was the issue. So, you have a little research work to do first. let me know about the lights!!
There are several sites that sell drives. You could a search on the net under xbox 360 drives and find one. I checked the rules for fixya and did not see anything that said I could not mention a specific site so. www.llama.com is a good source. You could also check ebay but I am always a little unsure there as you don't know for sure what your getting. However, llama has never done me wrong. They also have helpful tips on how to take apart your machine and do laser adjustments etc... You may want to try that before replacing the drive.
I have kinda the same prob.
I have bought mcla complete edition 4 times now thinking the problem was with the disc bach. But whenever I put in my other games they will work fine

Ok just pick it up and turn it over and bash it (i no your want to but dont hit it to hard lol) on the other side (im thinking that u have you xbox lying down) and its like theres a bit stick in it and doing this sort of bashes it out the way lol hope this works for you (it did for me) :D
Just make a slight adjustment to the laser and it'll work
Whats CF ? Mine is doing the same thing.
Hey I've opened mine up on several occasion's because I had the same problem too. In my case I had a bad wire one of the three wires that hook to the motor I fixed it sort of it worked for awhile but I didn't patch it up right so the wire burnt up where I fixed it and now I dont have enough wire left to make a connection any suggestions
Nimes doing the same thing all the compononts work the laser is not coming forward far enough o hit the switch that tells the motor to spin the disc my ps3 did same thing got that fixed but cant get the 360 to come forward enough any Ideas
My xbox has the open tray error.but when i put a disc in.i have no red lights but the disc is completely quiet when it goes to reading the disc.and it only takes a few seconds
It could also be the disc drive switch. when the disc drive covers are off there is a little board at the front of the device with a single screw. Undo this screw to get access to the switch and motor, take a reading of the switch at an open and closes switch position and if the reading in Ohms hits 0 then its ok. Next try the motor, plug the disc drive back in and turn the xbox on without the top cover on the tray (only do this if you're confident in your ability to take things apart safely! also make sure no disc is on the tray). Take a resistance reading to see if the motor is working properly.
Failing that and the above lens advice it may be worth buying a new disc drive and taking the steps shown on youtube to swapping the boards around.
NEVER DO THIS IF ITS STILL IN WARRANTY
I have the same issues. i put another cd drive in and it still not spinning. it tries but nothing. any suggestions
Well, mine was doing this same thing, and it has before (It usually just starts working after taking the harddrive out or turning it off and hitting it a bit on the side(Not saying it was a smart idea... but it worked)) and I was sitting there trying to record what sounds it made and after a few minutes it randomly read the disk right. I don't know what the problem was but I never really heard the drive spinning. Sometimes I guess it just needs a while to work.

Allright. That info could potentially be very helpful.
I am not showing the 'ring of red', the system is acting as it should. Secondly, the laser does work (i think). i get three short blasts from the laser trying to read the disk, then the process stops.
From what i read from your post, it seems to me like the motor on the thing is the problem. However, i'm not sure how to hook that up to an outside power source. If that isnt easy do-able, is there a way I can just buy a new cd drive for the xbox without having to buy a whole new system?
Thanks for your help thus far, i appreciate any more that comes my way.
I have to same, EXACT problem as he does. Only I know for sure its the motor because the motor spins... just it is dirty and stops half way when spinning. I can't pull it off either so some help on this might help.
i still have green lights i can still go online and chat with buddys but cant play any disks either dvd or game i know the disc isnt spinning i have had the same box for 3 years and i can tell just by listening to my box. i have taken it apart cleaned everything added some weight to the disc spinner and still nothing i think instead of wasting the time trying to do it myself i will just go buy another one i am very pleased with my x box and happy it lasted as long as it did but its time to retire the old boy
same problem, i took apart the Disk Drive and sprayed down the spindle with lubricant (silicone, not wd 40) and nothing, I know if you take the spindle off and clean it then relubricate it it should then work. But there is a tamper proof lock nut on the bottom of it. So I am not sure how to take it apart.
my 360 has been working fine and recently i have turned it on and it goes straight to dashboard, even when it is set to read the disc,i think that the 360 can't read the disc, it tries to. i don't get any error message or red lights. i can go online, play demo and trials. i then took it apart and noticed that the laser is working and it tries to spin the disc but it does not work.
when it is turned on at the dashboard, the 360 says to open tray and then i put in the disc, it tries to read the game, then says to open the tray again.
whats cf?
