Altec Lansing VS4121 no sound

you may want to try to rollback the driver, right click My Computer, left click properties, click hardware, then Device Manager, then sound video and game controllers, double click on the sound card and rollback if available, the speakers may also just simply be bad, If there is a seperate power source for the speakers,(an AC Adapter) then it may not be working correctly even if the power lights come on. The easiest way to determine if its the speakers, try them in a friends laptop or Desktop, on laptop, plug speakers into the headphone jack for sound output. if they work on another PC, then you have a driver issue, OR more than likely a Windows issue, in which case a Restore may be neccesary to fix, refer to the manufacturers instructions to restore your machine. Microsoftrecomends that you reinstall Windows XP at least every 12 months ( to me if it's not broke, don't fix it) in other words if you have no problems or need for a restore, don't do one because it has been over 12 mths. It sounds like you have done a good job at Troubleshooting, but to confirm the culprit try on another PC,(with your Headphones working, but your speakers wont, it sounds like your speakers have malfunctioned. I hope this helps, if so please give a fixya rating, or if it points you in the right direction, just please give appropriate rating. Thanks for the question

Want to increase volume on speakers

You may have already reached the limits if you have adjusted the settings through Control Panel (?). Are these external speakers you are listening through or is it the internal speaker?
In Control Panel (reached from the Start button, bottom left), choose Sounds and Audio Devices. The Volume tab is the first one. Make sure the Device volume slider bar is all the way to the right. Next, choose Advanced and make sure all those slider bars are up to the top with no Mute boxes checked. Finally, at the bottom choose Speaker Volume and make sure those slider bars are all the way to High.
If none of these help and you're using external speakers, it is time to buy a new set. If you only have an internal speaker you're listening with, keep in mind that they aren't powerful enough to give you the kind of volume needed to listen to some things on the web.

MY LAPTOP DOESN'T HAVE SOUND

Have you checked the sound properties to see if anything is muted? Double Click the speaker icon in the lower right hand of the screen (near clock). This will bring up a slider. Make sure "Mute" box is not checked, and adjust slider upwards. If you cannot hear any sound still, you will have to reinstall the sound card driver or if that doesnt help, then you may have to install a new sound card.

HP Compaq nx6115 PC Notebook : Speakers suddenly stopped working

Just go to your computer manufacturer's website and see if there are any audio driver updates, because that is what it sounds like to me. If there aren't any driver updates for your audio, then reinstall the audio drivers that it shows. If your computer is just a couple months old, then it is or should still be under warranty. if the driver update/ reinstall doesn not fix the issue, then if you purchased the laptop from a store, take it back, along with your receipt, and ask for an exchange or for them to repair it. if you bought it online, contact the site or your manufacturer if you ordered it from them, and request their process of sending it back for a replacement or repair. I hope. this helps you out

Distorted and crackling sounds

please check sound using external speaker.
if the result is same as using internal speaker, it's mean your mainboard may have problem, but try to install sound driver first.
if the result is different, you may have some loose screews inside your laptop and it stuck on internal speaker.
if you still have warranty, send it to acer.
