If you have a turbo, a shaft seal may be leaking some oil. Otherwise, the valve seals may be hard or worn enough to pass some oil during 'off' time. As long as it smokes only at startup, there is probably little to worry about until it begins smoking all of the time--then it will be time to replace the leaking seals which can be done without removing the heads. You might try a seal-softener additive in the oil or use 'high mileage' oil which contains seal softener. It also helps loosen sticking rings as well. Hope this helps.

I have a 2014 Dodge Ram sport quad 4x4 with a 5.7 L v8 hemi mds wt engine and a 8 spd auto transmission It takes oil and Chrysler says it s normal to put oil between oil change ,I don t think so.

If you are using a quart or more between oil changes and are not leaking then you should check the PVC valve first and valve guides second and rings third . Ouick check for guides is warm the vehicle up , at speed lift up on the gas abruptly and look for a puff of smoke out the tail pipe . If your guides are very worn then you will get a puff on cold startup . Rings symptom is constant blue smoke when running . PCV may not show symptoms other than oil consumption. If you have a turbo then that might be your problem

I have a 1990 2.2 subaru legacy it is either burning oil or losing it somewhere but no puddles head gaskets seem to be fine doesn't overheat and no water in the oil blows smoke on startup

I would check for a defective PCV valve. If it has not been changed, I have seen cases where they suck the oil right out of the engine. Depending on the mileage, I wouldn't be concerned over a small puff of smoke when starting the engine. Thanks.

Rx8 blue smoke

Blue smoke is caused by burning oil, if it only puffs for a minute on initial start up I wouldn't worry. It is really common for newer fuel injected engines to blow a small amount off blue smoke on cold startup. Plus rx8 use oil while the engine is on, if you are new to rotary engines then a little bit of history on this engine is they do burn much more oil than a typical piston combustion engine, that is due to the lubrication system, it actually uses oil in the entire rotary housing so the rotors dont get too hot. you are supposed to check/add oil every 2 gas fill ups. you would think the would come up with a better system, but thats the downside to a rotary. they are mean engines though. they are a 1.3L but, your oil seals might be going or your ignition coils or spark plugs may be going bad.

I am experiencing problems with my BMW 320i - 2004 model. It does not start easily. When it starts, a blue fuel smoke comes from the exhaust. this causes the car also to be heavy on fuel consumptio

Blue smoke is caused by oil. Rich running causes black smoke and will set the check engine light. Rich running (black smoke) on startup could be caused by a leaking injector. The blue smoke puff at startup is likely valve stem seals leaking or a bad crank case vent malfunction and sucking oil into the manifold at high vacuum conditions.

When I first start the car a puff of blue smoke comes out the back after driveing for awhile a strange smell is in the car?

This sounds as if you have a rather High Mileage vehicle. (100,000+)
The puff of blue smoke is oil being burned in the cylinders. When the engine is cold, it will burn some oil, usually sucked in through the Valve Stem Guides.
Then after the motor warms up, and all the metal parts swell a little, it stops smoking as much. It is STILL smoking, but not enough for you to see it.

Obviously, you are losing engine oil, so check the oil level often, and refill/change as neccessary.

The 'strange smell' could be many different things. My best guess is that you have Oil Leaks on the engine, which is dripping on to the Exhaust Manifold, and getting burned there. Usually a Valve-Cover Gasket leak. When the car is all warmed up, open the hood, with the engine running, and see if there is any whitish smoke rising from the motor. if so, you have a leak on to the manifold. A very common problem, easily repaired. Or, you may have a leak in the heaters' Core, which will leak Anti-freeze into the cabin of the car. That would smell sort of sickly-sweet. This will be a much more expensive problem to repair.

Anyway, it sounds as if the car is in need of some maintenance.
