I have the same problem. Mine has stopped making ice now. Thinking about putting old piece back in and gluing funnel frame. Did you ever find a picture of the order fo the switch piece to frame?
With the 2T-C, 3T-C, and 3K-C engines the Firing Order is 1-3-4-2 The distributor rotates ->Clockwise. (The rotor actually)
Number 1 spark plug tower on the distributor cap, faces directly towards the engine. Number 2 faces the back of the engine, Number 4 faces the front of the engine, Number 3 is to the outside away from the engine.
Number 1 spark plug is at the front of the engine. 1-2-3-4
With the 4A-C engine, and other A-Series, the Firing Order is 1-3-4-2 The distributor rotates ->CounterClockwise.
Number 1 spark plug tower is towards the engine, and faces the back of the engine. Number 3 spark plug tower is away from the engine, and faces the back of the engine. Number 2 spark plug tower is towards the engine, and faces the front. Number 3 spark plug tower is away from the engine, and faces the front.
Slide the plastic "L" in the back down (facing the back of tower it will be mid right) while holding the "L" down slide the side cover towards the back (facing the back of tower it will be the right side cover) It may take a little persuading!

The face plate buttons actually activate small buttons on a printed circuit board behind the face plate. When I removed the radio and then the face plate many small pieces of plastic fell from behind the face plate. These small plastic pieces align the face plate button to the printed circuit board buttons. My Beeetle is almost 10 1/2 years old so I imagine the plastic is just becoming brittle with age. I could not set the radio to FM, so I removed the face plate button and now slide a toothpick in the slot to toggle between FM1 & FM2. Not he best solution, but probably the most inexpensive one. I also made my on tool to remove the radio from a diagram found at: http://www.alientech.net/nbinfo/stereo.html
I had the same problem finding a Water Tower laying in the bottom of the dishwasher. Solution is to simply lift the bottom rack and insert the tower into the center-most square hole. Twist the tower with the large lip on the bottom of the rack and the two plastic pieces will overlap two sides of the square hole. It will come lose again in time, but just reset it again.
