Question about Kenmore 31913 Progressive Direct Drive Bagged Upright Vacuum

Switch I have a kenmore 31913 vacuum and the on/off switch appears to be bad. My problem is getting into the switch. How do I open up the handle to get to the switch?

    Unit shuts off when you turn it on. You must hold the on/off switch in the on position to use the cleaner. Painful in a short time.

    Took the unit to Sears repair at 7 months old, they said they replaced the upper arm on/off switch. Same problem in 3 1/2 month, but they wanted $65 to repair the unit..... POOR SERVICE.



    Switch not in the upper arm, it is in the lower half and is of a poor design.



    What can be done to solve the problem?

    Have on/off switch on Kenmore 31912 Progressive upright vacuum that is bad. Can't seem to get diagram to take off the parts to look at the switch wiring. Can anyone help?

My purple proggesive kenmore upright motor works but beater not beating help thank you
I just had the same problem - reset button didn't trip - cleaned the roller - ultimately found there is an override switch at the point where the hose attaches to the base of the vacuum - it disables the roller when you use the attachments. The hose had become loose (but not disconnected) enough to trip the switch. An easy fix after alot of tinkering... p.s. All those "experts" that said to change a belt obviously don't understand that this model is beltless...

My vacuum lost power completely. it will not turn on at all.
Have you checked the screw that holds the handle to the vaccuum?

If it is loose, the power will not go on.

Try it!

Replacing the electical cord on Kenmore Progressive Vacuum
To the right of where the cord comes out of the machine is a large screw. Remove it, and slide the upper handle assembly free.
Then, on the front of the machine, remove the screws located toward the top of the vacuum just inside the bag chamber cover. This will allow the front panel to be removed, giving you access to the cord from the front.

Will not start at all
most likely if it dont turn on at all period.1 of 2 things on/off switch went out or 2 motor burned up but most time u can tell if it is bad motor cause if it smelt like burnt plastic ever bad news its dead but hopefully u can just change switch

Getting suction to use attachments
When the vacuum is in the upright position, it should give you suction thru the hose.

Kenmore direct drive will no longer self-propell
There may also be a reset button. If the brushes get stuck the unit can shut off power to the brushes to keep a total melt down from occurring. The reset button should return power in these types of vacuums.
