Setting Amana Heat Pump Thermostat.

I'm moving into a rent house that has an Amana heat pump thermostat. Under the cover the numbers are 2H/1C w-r Type 1F59-81. I don't know how to set it. How do you turn it off? Is there a manual online?

Heat pump runs on electric when outside temperature is higher than cutin

Check your thermostat and heat pump owner's manuals. Thermostat may be programmed to require electric heat at higher temps. Also could be bad outdoor temperature sensor tied to
Heat pump system controls (I had that problem) When was it installed? Warranty thermostat and or Heat pump? Call installer
Thermostat programming is a headache. No help from installer? call customer service heat pump and thermostat. Some possibility of bad installer wiring. There is also a heat pump "defrost" cycle. Usually the Electric coil will turn on to compensate for the Defrost cycle which is just the standard air conditioning mode therefore moves heat from inside to the outside coil to melt the frost. This cycle may be occurring too often. I had that problem. Fixed under warrantee.
Heat pumps are complex machines. The controls even more.
You need a tech, hopfully you are still under warranty.
Hope this helps.

The Orange wire for the reversing valve and used with a Heat Pump
If you have a heat pump, then yes. If you have a gas furnace then no. If you have a HP and the reversing valve is not connected, then you might just be using the emergency electric heat strips. :-o

The fault symbol is flashing and the red light is on, how do I determine the fault and how to reset after fault is found?

You can get an operators manual on Robertshaw's web site. The fault could be that it's too co;d outside for the heat pump to be efficient. Once you get the manual you'll be able to find out exactly what's wrong.

I do not have a manual for my thermostat

You have a heat pump unit most of the time the unit will operate in normal mode heat setting on your thermostat but when the temp of house can't keep up the emergency heat will kick in. With that being said you can switch the t-stat to emergency mode and that will take the heat pump out of action and bring in the back up heat. You might have electrical heat strips or maybe a fuel such as natural gas or propane. hope that answers your question Ken

If your thermostat has an emergency heat setting this means you have a heat pump system.
Yes you need to set the thermostat to heat for heating the house.
The emergency heat setting should never be used unless your outside unit is not functioning.
The emergency heat setting overides the heat pump (the outside unit will not be energized).
The emergency heat setting will run the auxillary heat (heat strips) only.
When the thermostat is set in the heat position the heat pump will run to heat your house.
If the heat pump can't keep up (extreme cold) then then the auxillary heat will kick in to augment the heat pump until it satisfies the thermostat settings. If your room temperature gets 2 degrees below your thermostat setpoint, your auxillary heat will kick on. Example, say you are going to be gone a couple of days and you turn your heat down to 60 degrees. When you return and it is 60 degrees in your house, you turn the thermostat up to 70 degrees. Since you are turning the temperature up 2 degrees or more (10 degrees in this case) from the 60 degree room temperature then the heat pump will come on and the auxillary heat strips. The unit will continue heating like this until the temperature in the house gets to 69 degrees and the heat strips will turn off and the heat pump will continue to run until the 70 degree setpoint is reached.
Hope this helps.

Where is the reset button on an Amana ASZ14 unit?

I don't think the Amana ASZ14 Heat Pump has a reset switch, but you can still reset it by resetting the power (when it's not running... turn your thermostat OFF first).

To reset the power, locate your circuit breaker box. There should be a double-breaker for the Heat Pump and another double-breaker for the Air Handler. Turn them both off for at least 2-3 minutes. Then flip them back on and turn your thermostat back ON.

You're thermostat may also have a RESET button that you can push. I have to reset mine every time I change the batteries in it.

I have an amana heat pump that needs a dual fuel kit. Will a outdoor thermostat solve the problem. I can get a OT18-60A Outdoor Thermostat Goodman for a good price.

the outdoor thermostat is normally used when the temp is low enough that the heat pump cant keep up with the demand for heat so the thermostat is used to shut down the heat pump and heat by auxillary heat only
