Your iPhone and your friend's iPhone should be running the same application to find each other. Also, most of the file/photo saharing app from the AppStore requires that you must be connected on the same wifi network to be able to share.
As far as I know, only game apps have the ability to connect via bluetooth. File sharing apps requires wifi connectivity.
And, if you might ask about the other cell phone brands, NO, you CANNOT connect them with your iPhone, because as I've said, they have to be running the same app to be able to connect.

Hello. There are lots of bluetooth profiles, but iPhone was only made to accept headsets or handsfree. This is a pain but, I guess you need to transfer files of some kind. If so, there are apps to transfer contacts such as "Bump" and Apps to transfer files ie pics such as "File Share". You do need the other iPhone to have these Apps installed however. Another good App is "Bluetooth Photo Share". If you type bluetooth into the Apps search page you will get a whole host of Apps which will overcome your problem. Hope this helps Jim
