I have had my Altec Lansing for approx 1.5yrs, has worked great, no problems, until now, I plug it in and the battery flashes and then nothing. Is the battery dead?

Use system restore to a point when the speakers were working. Then take it from there.

I have to turn the volume to max to hear any sound. Up until now the speakers were great and only needed to be turned on slightly? any suggestions please?

First things first:
1) check your speaker for good connector, and all is working is playing fine.
2) check if your warranty covers one SPK. or RMS

have you checked the voltage requirement of the speakers?possibly, the voltage requirement of your speakers isn't adequately supplied by your batteries.if this is the case,please purchase the necessary batteries that would suffice the needs of your speakers.

Sounds like a bad connection, i wouldnt even try and repair it i would just return them for a replacement. Could be a bad solder connection inside or the cable.
