It won't show up on your desktop automatically.
Go to Start > Computer and you should see it listed under Devices with Removable Storage.
You can create a shortcut there for your desktop.

Using Wndows Explorer, you can copy and paste the files you want to back up from your C: drive to your Firelite.

VISTA: Hit the flag and go to computer. You should see the hard drive then if it is plugged in.

XP: Hit start and go to my computer and you should see the hard drive then if it is plugged in.

If this doesn't work try another USB slot for the dard drive. Some of your USB slots may be defective.

Wanto erase all data from firelite backup drive

You could try data rewriting software to erase your data, like AOMEI Partition Assistant Erase hard drive feature: http://www.extend-partition.com/help/wipe-data.html first you need to connect this disk on your computer and then download the free version of Partition Assistant to use.

Can backup system be used for more than 1 computer?

Yes, most software supports this natively.

You can only backup 1 pc at a time though (whichever the drive is connected to).
also, If the disc is only 40gb you may not be able to back very much up onto the drive.

The program I use is ez-backitup

It's pretty simple, you just select the files you want to backup, save the job and it will ask you where to back it up at, When it runs it pretty much just recreates the files and folders on the external drive, so you can look at them later if you want, they are not in some compressed file or anything.

111 GB SMARTDISK Firelite with 107 GB of Free Space... File System: FAT32 which only allows 4GB OF Backup... HELP!!!

In a FAT32 filesystem, the maximum size of a single file is 4.2GB.
It sounds like your backup program is backing up the disk to a single file.
To fix the problem you can either
1) Get a new backup program, or change the settings of your backup program not to create files larger than 4.2GB. Unless I know what backup program you use, I cannot help on this issue.
or
2) Convert the volume to NTFS, following instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881. Then your backup file can be as bug as the disk itself.

MY COMPUTER DIED. HOW DO I TRANSFER THE FILES FROM MY VERBATIM SMARTDISC FIRELITE 160 GB, USBFLB160' TO ANOTHER COMPUTER? THANKS...........................JOHN NICKERSON

It depends on how you copied your files to the SmartDisk.
If you used the "normal" method of copying files/folders in Windows, then just connect it to the new computer.
If you used some "backup" software from Verbatim to write "backup" files,
then you'll need to install that software on the new computer,
in order to retrieve from those "backup" images.

Erase Firelite backups so drive is clean and I can start over

Empty the Recycle Bin -- the files that you "erased" were _only_ moved from their location into the Recycle Bin -- they still occupy just as much disk-space.

SMARTDISK FIRELITE 120 GIG WONT LET ME BACK IN I HAVE ALL MUSIC ON IT

Try to get the drive detected on a different computer and if it does the same then try to connect to a mac computer it will be detected then make a backup of the data and reformat the drive. it will be fine, this is a very common issue with flashdrives and external hdd.
try and let me know.

second solution is run a scandisk on this drive letter detected by windows then try doing the same step said above.

AUTOMATIC BACKUP TO EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE (FIRELITE)

The first thing that comes to mind is the Firelite has become full and can not accept any more backup data.
Delete the data on the Firelite and try running your backup again. If it works then that was the problem.
The backup software should have a configuration setting somewhere that allows it to automatically delete older data and keep it from filling up.
