Will the woofer work without the other two speakers?
There is no point.
The woofer(sub woofer) just delivers the bass. You usually put the sub woofer out of the way under your desk.
Without the other speakers you would just get the thumping bass and no treble

Try reinstalling the Audio Drivers on your disk that came with your P.C. If you no longer have them check on Microsoft.com XP audio drivers.

I, too got a secondhand pair of these speakers
I mentioned somewhere in here already that I found a person who had the plug I needed, and actually had to splice it onto a 15-watt adaptor. The speakers work fine.
