I have a SX20IS. Purchased a Speedlite 430EX. It fires manually, but I cannot get it to flash with any camera setting. Manual says slave and master must be on the same channel. I see how to do this, but what channel do I set it to and is camera the master and the flash attachment the slave?

SOURCE: Slave Flash

I'm guessing you're talking about a wireless connection...

Unfortunately, the 430EX can only act as a slave. You'll need one of the following to act as a master control unit: 550EX, 580EX, 508EX II or the ST-E2 transmitter :-(

SOURCE: Trigger a Speedlite 430EX II with a studio flash

  1. Make sure the trigger you are using is compatible with digital flashes.
  2. isolate the smaller contact so they do not "short out" on the trigger.
  3. make sure the trigger is working and will fire other flashes

The flash ratio between a master unit mounted on my Canon 5D Mark II and slave doesn't work properly. A couple of shots are fine but then all of sudden the slave unit fires ar full power, then a few week...

If you had the ATG Gold MG8k Flash Kim X3, then your 430EX II or 580EX II can transforms into wireless radio ATG ETTL II.

If you are using the outdated wireless IR ETTL with a 580EX II as a Master. Then you have to set the Slave (ATG/580EX II/430EX II) body facing close to the Master.

Speedlite 430EX II pilot red light wont turn off wont fire

Try mounting the flash on your camera, turn both on and reset your camera to factory default settings in your camera menu settings.

Canon 550 ex speedlight - flashes okay. Won't sink with 60d (tried different cameras at dealer - same problem) Camera is okay .

Bruce,
Try these steps:
1. Set camera to manual2. Set shutter to 1/60
3. Set aperture to F5.6
4. ASA/ISO 200
5. 550EX on hotshoe
6. Do not set on slave or master
7. Turn on flash

Display must shows, ETTL.
If that doesn't work, you have to use the flash on manual.
Some of this model will not work fully on ATG Canon EOS-1D C, ATG Canon EOS-1D X IR, Canon EOS-1D X/60D/T4i because this flash is over 20 years old.

Unless you would want it to be modified by me.
But that can be costly when you can get the 580EX II for less than $425.00 USD.

Remote Firing of Flash Units

The EOS 40D does not have a transmitter built in. The remote flash units must be set to "Slave" and the on-camera external flash unit (eg Speedlite 580EX) or transmitter (ST-E2) set to "Master". Note that the Speedlite 430EX doesn't have the function to act as Master and you need a minimum or the 580EX or a ST-E2 speedlite transmitter (or similar) as Master/s.

Canon 430EX Flash

I have a 430ex and S5, I don't think the zoom head will move without being mounted on a camera.

If the flash test fires ok, then it should be fine.
