What if my Garmin 255 W doesn't recognize my address. Google maps can't find my house either. Can I tag the GPS coordinates? Thanks

Are the French maps already purchased for the unit? Plug it into your PC and open Garmin Express. If French maps are part of your map package, they will show up and update. If they are not part of your map package, you would have to buy they from Garmin. You might have to buy the French Map SD card from Garmin if your unit does not have enough memory space let.

Maps are selected via location in the upper right hand corner when doing an address search as maps cover specified locations. If you can't input a French address, then you don't have French maps installed.

Do a hard reset on your GPS. Download and install Garmin Express from Garmin. Plug your GPS into your computer. The software will identify your GPS and allow you to download new maps to it.

If you are having problems finding a particular address, try some of following tips. In some cases the address may be listed as being in a different city other than the one that was chosen. When the unit asks for the City Name, try choosing Search All Cities. If the address is listed under a different City Name, doing this will allow the unit to find the address. Also, when entering a street name, it is important that you leave off any direction or label. For example, if the address was 2536 SW Melrose Place, you would enter 2536 for the house number and only Melrose for the street name. Using the house number and city/state, the unit will fill in the direction (SW) and label (Place).

If you are still unable to find the address, the mapping may not have the address available yet. Please report this to our Cartography department using the Error Report Form which can be found at the following link:

I have a Garmin nuvi 1390 and live in the country, so my Garmin was unable to locate my address. I'm not sure if this will work on your model, but it may be worth a try. What I did is this: I turned on my Garmin at my house and let in acquire the satellites, I then went to the Tools menu and chose "Where Am I?" It should now display your location using longitude and latitude. If you can save this location and name it as "Home", or at the very least write down the longitude and latitude coordinates and then use the "Where To?" function, select Coordinates, type in the coordinates and save it. You should be able to save it with any name you choose.

Consistent errors are usually projection or datum related. If you are taking coordinates collected in one projection and displaying them in your GPS in another, you the points will offset. I'm not talking about the decimal degrees 00.000n 000.0000w vs 00 00 00N 00 00 00W. I'm talking about the geographic model to represent the surface of the earth. Google Earth generally uses a geographic projection with WGS 1984 or WGS84 Datum. Make sure you are using the same settings on your GPS.

This has to do with the mapping information. The map does not provide enough detail to resolve ur specific address. Its not a hardware problem with the GPS. I have the same problem with my address. Best thing to do is drive to your address and then save that location as HOME or set your HOME to those coordinates.

Change the mini usb cable. Some mini usb cable are for charging and not data. It happen to me and used the externo hard drive usb mini cable and zapppppp my computer nows read the gps and gave it a drive (h:\). hope it works for you.

All that is necessary to do is to connect to the Garmin web site at http://www.garmin.com and register your GPS on their site. After you are properly registered then all you will need to do is go to the support tab and then you can update your map. Let us know if you have any problems.
