I have a GE TFF22RC Side-by Side refrigerator which has run fine for 26 years. I arrived home yesterday to find a burning smell coming from the refrigerator. The air circulation fan inside the upper portion of the unit still runs, but the refrigeration unit at the bottom will not come on anymore so there is no longer any cooling. Is this a condition that can be repaired, or do I need to replace my refrigerator?
Sounds like the compressor has gone out or at least the electricals on it. You can replace the relay if that is all it is but at 26 years I would seriously consider replacement. The newer units are more energy efficient and the insulation in your unit has degraded with the years.
