GE TFF22RC Side-by Side refrigerator burning smell and no cooling

I have a GE TFF22RC Side-by Side refrigerator which has run fine for 26 years. I arrived home yesterday to find a burning smell coming from the refrigerator. The air circulation fan inside the upper portion of the unit still runs, but the refrigeration unit at the bottom will not come on anymore so there is no longer any cooling. Is this a condition that can be repaired, or do I need to replace my refrigerator?

Sounds like the compressor has gone out or at least the electricals on it. You can replace the relay if that is all it is but at 26 years I would seriously consider replacement. The newer units are more energy efficient and the insulation in your unit has degraded with the years.

Relays are located on the left side of the compressor. How long ago did you smell the burning smell? Are you 100% sure the compressor is running? If it is, nothing is wrong with the relays. Although sometimes it is hard to tell if the compressor is running. By morning temps will be higher than tonight if compressor isnt running. If it isnt running, relays must be changed. I will post shortly on how to change the relays.

Think our refridgerator motor went smell of smoke but is still cool will it burn

Check to see if your condensor fan motor is running, should be behind the refrigerator backing plate and close to your compressor. Usually caused by a very dirty condensor unit. You have to vacuum, brush or blow out the condensor coils at least once a year to prevent overheating damage and to save 100.00 to 300.00 a year in electricity. If this is not the problem then let me know if the smell is coming from inside the freezer, refer section, or underneath.

26 year old refrigerator quit cooling. neither the refrigerator or the freezer side has any cool air. actually, the inside is hotter than the outside air.

Bad compressor. Or, it's lost all of its "Freon". Not really cost effective to repair, call a service center and get a "best guess" quote.
